At PALLAY, we believe that art transcends borders, techniques and materials. That is why we are always looking for opportunities to expand the creative horizons of our talented high Andean weavers, whose ancestral textile art is already a unique form of expression.
Recently, we had the privilege of conducting a watercolor workshop, a transformative experience that brought together women from two different communities: Acchahuata and Challwaccocha, in the heart of the Sacred Valley of Cusco.
An encounter between textiles and painting
This workshop was made possible by Adelaida, a talented Chilean watercolorist who contacted us to share her passion and knowledge with our weavers. The main idea was to give them the opportunity to explore a completely different but complementary type of art to their textile work.
Watercolour, with its fluidity and ability to mix colours, proved to be a perfect medium for our weavers, who are used to combining threads and shades in their fabrics. The connection was almost immediate: with each stroke, they discovered how their artistic sensitivity was easily translated into this new format.
Art and community: an unforgettable experience
The workshop was not only about learning a new technique, but also about creating bonds. The weavers, from two different high Andean communities, met and shared stories, laughter and learnings in an environment full of creativity and camaraderie.
First, each of them created their own individual work, exploring shapes, colours and emotions. Then, they all joined forces in a group work, where the mix of colours and styles gave life to a piece that symbolises unity and collaboration. The result was a wonderful collective work, a true representation of the community spirit that we value so much at PALLAY.
Art as a bridge and transformation
This workshop reminded us that art, in any of its forms, has the power to connect, transform and empower. For our weavers, it was an opportunity to reaffirm their creativity and discover that their talents go beyond the loom.
At PALLAY, we will continue to look for ways to enrich the lives of these incredible women, not only by promoting their textile art, but also by opening doors to new creative worlds for them.
